Building the pod (Understanding Adobe Audition)

Some recent listener feedback

Hello Bruce.
Thank you for the pedagogical way of showing how to use the Adobe Audition 3 and making me so interested.
All the best
Kasper

Actually, Adobe and Lynda are the ones that should be thanking you.
I purchased both Audition and a subscription to Lynda based solely on what I'm hearing on your excellent programs.
And I hate the word podcasts.
It lumps you in with all the a**holes that think they are content producers because they have a microphone and an internet connection (and you are obviously a professional dedicated to his craft, and know how to produce content).
They just don't know what they don't know!
Scott Hess

I'm a long time listener to your Building the Pod and Sine Language shows, and would like to thank you for producing such informative and interesting podcasts.
I'm a media production student at the University of Lincoln in the UK and your Audition guides really helped me during the radio production aspect of my course.
Paul Hennell

I've only recently decided to get back into music production after a prolonged absence.
So, when it came to choosing a DAW, it came down to a choice between FL Studio and Audition.
Dollar wise, quite similar although FL Studio does offer more in the way of virtual instruments for this price range.
But I chose Audition for two clear reasons.
1. I really like the look and feel. The layout is just easy on the eye and made sense to me very quickly.
2. I knew I had a great teacher. I discovered Building the Pod through the Adobe web site and soon found Sine Language.
I have to thank you sincerely for your weekly tuition.
It has turned a somewhat severe learning curve into managable bite size pieces.
I simply can't overstate how thankful I am of your weekly podcasts.
Bye for now.
Ross Huntley

Oh thank you god a podcast showing you how to properly make podcasts. Thank you Bruce Williams!
Matt

The state of play

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 19:56

Howdy folks.
Here we go again.
Another week and no podcasts.
This is getting monotonous.

Building The Pod:
As previously mentioned, until the next version ships, there isn’t a lot more I can say. Still happy to crank out the odd episode here and there if anyone has questions requiring answers regarding using Audition. At the moment, there are no unanswered questions. If I’ve overlooked your e-mail, drop me a reminder!

Shutters Inc:
ARN are offering me a full time gig, so I guess that’s bad news as far as the future of Shutters Inc is concerned. I’m not knocking it on the head just yet, as I haven’t had a chance to speak to Shelton lately, but one thing we know already is that without hours during a weekday, it’s almost impossible for Shelton and I to record. Believe me when I say I DON’T want to see SI fall by the wayside… I love it too much! Please hang in there, dear faithful.

Sine Language:
I know, I know… that pesky milestone is like a speedhump I can’t seem to get over! Know this though; the mix of the song (and the associated screen capture) IS DONE!
Still to be done?

  • The intro graphics… got a guy working on that on my behalf.
  • Intro voice over… that will take 2 mins ONCE I get the intro graphics.
  • Edit down the video footage into something presentable. That will be a big job… will probably take a couple of nights.
  • Upload a version to YouSendIt for the volunteers to ’seed’ via torrent.

Will all that happen this week?
I’d like to say ‘yes’ (and believe me when I say I WILL be aiming for that), but seeing how the last month has zipped past in the blink of an eye… I’m not willing to make another promise I can’t keep.

A big weekend

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 10:46

Well, as you have probably guessed by now, no, there are no podcasts this week.
Last week seemed to disappear down a rabbit hole, as we made final plans for my party on Saturday night, combined with me preparing for today’s e-Seminar.
I am hoping (stress the “hoping”) to get episode 100 of Sine Languge recorded this week.
As for BTP and SI… that’s anybody’s guess.
I’ll see what I can do.
Thanks again for all the suggestions for birthday presents, too!

Birthday presents?

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 13:30

OK peeps, need your thoughts.
What does a 40 year old guy want for his birthday?
NOT audio gear (’cause anything along that line I’d buy through my company).
Budget? Up to about AU$500 (US$400).
Don’t e-mail me.
Put your ideas in the comments below.
It might help other folks come up with ideas, too!
Thanks y’all!

This post is now closed to further comments. Thanks to all those who made suggestions!

The absence continues

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 14:13

Again, no Shutters Inc or Building The Pod this week.

And next week, there’ll be NO podcasts at all, as Cath, Max and I are off to Western Australia for 8 days.
One of my cousins is getting married next Sunday.
We’ll be back in Sydney Monday night.
Looking forward to getting over there and seeing my Dad (whom I haven’t seen in 2 years) and my Nan (whom I haven’t seen in 3 years).
Will be “off-the-web” for most of that time, I would imagine.
So, if you have questions or comments, by all means, send ‘em through, but just understand that I may not get to answer them as quickly as I normally would!

No BTP or SI

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc — Bruce Williams @ 18:14

Sorry gang.
Despite having some time to myself this weekend, I still didn’t get around to recording Building the pod.
And although Shelton and I HAD planned to record Shutters Inc this week, technical difficulties AGAIN conspired against us.
Grrrr.

The tables are turned

Filed under: Building the Pod, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 10:59

After 2 months, I finally got to record an episode of Shutters Inc this week!
But unfortunately, other activities prevented me from getting to Building the Pod or Sine Language.
Apologies one and all.

Building the pod - episode 126

Filed under: !Podcasts, Building the Pod, Mediasweeper — Bruce Williams @ 15:33
icon for podpress  btp126.mp3 [19:37m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

In episode 126, I invited Michael Rooney (the author of the shareware program, Mediasweeper) to come over and have a chat about exactly what his application is designed to do, and how it works.

For anyone who uses the multitrack side of Audition, this program is a MUST-HAVE!

With versions 2 and 3 of Audition, pressing record in the multitrack writes the new audio directly to your hard drive, even though you may not yet be sure that what you’re recording is going to be a ‘keeper’.

This means that over time, you can end up with quite a lot of saved audio files on your hard disc that you don’t need or want to keep.

Mediasweeper will help you identify (and move) those useless files to another folder ready for deletion (or archiving).

And if you can spare a few bucks via a PayPal donation, I’m sure Michael would be most appreciative!

e-Seminars… again

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language, e-Seminar — Bruce Williams @ 18:29

Just checked with my contact at Adobe here in Sydney.
As I thought, attendance is free, but you do need to register in advance.
And you can do that by going here.

And I should probably have included the Shutters Inc listeners in the last post… so I’m doing it now.
Not because I host any e-Seminars which will interest the SI crowd, but some of the other Adobe Ambassadors here in Australia (guys like Mark Galer, Phillip Andrews, et al) host e-Seminars relating to Photoshop, Lightroom and the like.
So, go check ‘em out!

Upcoming Adobe e-Seminars

Filed under: Adobe Audition, Building the Pod, Sine Language, Soundbooth, e-Seminar — Bruce Williams @ 10:09

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that I have 2 additional e-Seminars booked for the end of the year.
That means there are 3 opportunities to learn about Audition and Soundbooth VISUALLY between now and Christmas! Woohoo!
So, here are the details:

Friday 19th September, 2008
Clean Up Audio with Adobe Audition 3
12 noon - 1pm AEST (UTC +10)

Monday 27th October 2008
Introduction to Adobe Soundbooth CS4
2pm - 3pm ADST (UTC +11)

Friday 21st November 2008
Top 5 Adobe Soundbooth CS4 Features
12 noon - 1pm ADST (UTC +11)

All e-Seminars take place at the same URL, which is right here.

However, if you go there in advance, you’ll probably see some other e-Seminar title and some other presenter’s name.
Don’t worry… show up on the dates listed above, and you’ll find me.
Hope to see some of you there.
If you have other friends who use Audition or Soundbooth and you think this might be of interest, please advise them to swing by audio2u.com and check out this post.
Cheers.

Building the pod - episode 125

icon for podpress  btp125.mp3 [16:59m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

This week, a bunch of listener e-mails to answer.
First up, we heard from Bomar in France. After editing and mixing this episode, it occurred to me that this really should have been in Sine Language rather than BTP… oh well, sue me!
Bomar mentioned (among other things), a microphone which is alledgedly capable of picking up the sound of an ant’s footsteps.
Unfortunately, the site doesn’t appear to have any audio samples of this awesome feat.
Mmmmmm, sorry Bomar, but please forgive my scepticism! :)
Bomar went on to talk about field recorders, which led to a discussion on ‘auto gain control’ circuits (and why I don’t like them).

Next up, I received an e-mail from Ken at Bear Creek Studios who alerted me to a piece of software called Mediasweeper.
This looks really nifty, although I do need to spend some more time with it.
What it is designed to do is to look at your Audition .ses files and show you a list of which assets (read: wav files, mp3’s, avi’s, whatever) are referenced by the session file, and then allow you to either move all those files, or delete any wavs in the project folder which are NOT referenced by the session file!
If it does as promised, this will be a God-send!
Unfortunately, there’s no help file with it.
When I’ve spent some more time with it, I’ll report back.

Then, Wayne Montle wrote to tell me about Pamela, a piece of software which sits in between Skype and your DAW of choice.
What it does is allow you to split your outgoing audio (your voice) and your incoming audio (the person you’re talking to) into a left/right stereo signal so that you can later edit your Skype call with split tracks.
For those with soundcards which don’t offer that flexibility natively, this could be a huge blessing.
Thanks for the tip, Wayne.

Finally, I received an e-mail from Patrique Osborne who was concerned that I was advocating the growing of marijuana in episode 124!
I had a good laugh at this.

Dramas last week

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 17:35

As many of you noticed, I was having problems last week with my RSS feeds being broken.
Turns out that my web hosting company had changed something behind the scenes which promptly broke my feeds.
Although I have already privately thanked him, I just wanted to quickly say “Thanks mate!” to Phil Massyn (publicly) for getting his hands dirty on my behalf trying to work out what had gone wrong.
So…. thanks mate!
If you’re interested in understanding the technical side of podcasting (scripts, computer languages, etc) you should definitely check out Phil’s podcast.

Connected again

Filed under: Building the Pod, Shutters Inc, Sine Language — Bruce Williams @ 22:23

Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of communication this past weekend.
Cath, Max and I went to Melbourne for 4 days.
Had very limited access to internet due to the absolutely OUTRAGEOUS prices being charged by our hotel (A$29 for 24 hours internet!! You gotta be freakin’ kidding?)
It’s now Tuesday night, and we’ve just finished a 10+ hour drive home.
Totally knackered.
Off to bed now.
Obviously, no podcasts.
